Baby blues or postpartum depression: how to tell the difference

A large majority of new mothers go through a dip in mood after giving birth. But not every dip is the same.

The baby blues

It usually appears between day 3 and day 5, with crying, irritability, and heightened emotional sensitivity. It's linked to hormonal shifts and fades on its own within a few days, with no particular treatment needed.

Postpartum depression

It builds more gradually, often in the weeks following the birth, and lasts well beyond two weeks. It shows up as deep sadness, loss of interest, and sometimes a sense of detachment from the baby.

When to seek help

• If symptoms persist beyond two weeks
• If the intensity increases rather than fading
• If there are dark thoughts or a feeling of being unable to care for the baby

Talking to a doctor, midwife, or mental health professional is never a sign of weakness: postpartum depression treats well when caught early.

The key role of the partner

The baby blues and postpartum depression are sometimes more visible to people around than to the person going through it, caught up in the day-to-day. A partner who notices signs that last, worsen, or come with withdrawal can start the process of seeking professional help, without waiting for the person to ask themselves.

A reality more common than people think

A significant share of new mothers go through postpartum depression, often underdiagnosed because it's mistaken for normal postpartum tiredness. Fathers and non-birthing partners can be affected too, an aspect still too rarely discussed.

During this sensitive time, Kickoala lets loved ones help in concrete ways, by giving exactly what eases the new mother's daily life.
