Premature birth: adapting your registry and your needs
A premature birth changes a lot of things, including material needs, which are often different and sometimes needed later than planned.
What changes right away
A premature baby often spends time in neonatal care before coming home. Everyday items (clothes, stroller) become useful later than expected, once the baby actually comes home.
Specific needs to plan for
- Clothes in preemie sizes, smaller than standard newborn size
- A car seat suited to low birth weight, not every model works below a certain weight
- A breast pump, often needed from the first days if direct breastfeeding isn't possible yet

Skin-to-skin contact, also called kangaroo care, helps stabilise a premature baby's temperature, heart rate, and breathing. Many neonatal units encourage parents to practise it regularly, as soon as the baby's condition allows.

- Pack a dedicated bag with a change of clothes, snacks, and a charger, for what are often long days
