You have probably been shown baby registries adding up to €3,000. The truth is that a newborn needs very little, and most first-year purchases can wait. Here is a realistic budget, line by line, to welcome your baby without draining your savings before the birth.
The three things that actually matter
Sleep, transport and feeding take up most of the budget. These are the only lines worth spending properly on: they get used every single day from day one, and they relate directly to your baby's safety.
- A cot and a brand-new mattress, never second-hand: €150 to €200
- An approved car seat suited to birth weight: around €120
- Feeding basics — bottles, a pump or a nursing pillow: €80
- Nappies and changing supplies for the first two months: €60
Stick to those four lines and you are at a little over €400. The rest is a buffer for the surprises of the first few weeks, and there are always surprises.
What can genuinely wait
Bottle warmers, electric sterilisers, a dedicated changing table, booties for a baby who cannot walk yet, going-out outfits in newborn size: these are the purchases that most often end up at the back of a cupboard. Babies grow fast, and many newborn-size clothes are worn for only a few weeks.
