Baby carrier or wrap: which one to choose

Babywearing makes daily life with a newborn much easier, but choosing between a carrier and a wrap depends on your actual use more than on trends.
The ergonomic baby carrier
Quicker to put on, it suits occasional use or short outings well. Check that it respects the physiological M-position of the baby's legs, an essential safety and comfort criterion.
The baby wrap
More versatile once mastered, it adapts to every body shape and position, including from birth. It does require a learning curve though, often via tutorials or dedicated workshops.
The best compromise to start with
- If you want something simple and quick from the start, begin with an ergonomic carrier
- If you carry often and for long stretches, the wrap becomes more comfortable once you've mastered it
- Some parents use both, depending on the time of day
Weight and duration limits
Most ergonomic carriers work from birth up to 15-20 kg depending on the model, often needing a newborn insert for the first few weeks. Avoid carrying for more than 2 consecutive hours without a break, for the baby's comfort as much as yours.
Protecting your back
- Spread the weight across shoulders AND hips with a well-adjusted waist belt
- Alternate the carrying side or position throughout the day if you carry for long stretches
- A poorly adjusted carrier tires the back far faster than one that's simply less stylish
Whichever you choose, Kickoala lets you add it to your registry from any brand or specialist shop.
